Cement Sector in Lebanon:

Lebanon is not only unique in its geographical location as the facade of the Arab world on the Mediterranean Sea; it also represents the interaction of cultures that gave birth to a nation whose people became used to gazing on the summits of the Cedars from the coasts. On their mountains and coasts, they built cities with remarkable communities and transformed the Bekaa Valley into a storehouse that has enriched the country’s production.

The nature of Lebanon’s wealth and its resources constituted a framework for development, integrated within the economic plan of the Lebanese State, which enacted several laws to encourage investment in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors. This led to the economic growth of Lebanon, on which we build all our hopes and plans for a better and sustainable future.

The history of the cement industry in Lebanon dates back to 1929 with the incorporation of Société des Ciments Libanais, which accompanied Lebanon's economic and social development, and never failed in meeting its environmental commitment, even after the firm changed its name to Holcim Lebanon in 2002. Cimenterie Nationale and Société de Sibline then showed the same environmental, social and economic commitment, since by the end of the 20th century, $500 million was invested by Lebanese cement companies, in order to boost their annual cement production to more than 5 million tons, relying on the latest environmental and industrial conditions.

Along with the cement industry in Lebanon, other industries of construction materials were created and contributed to the development of the construction sector. Holderchem Building Chemicals SAL, which produces several chemicals for the ready-mixed concrete, and chemical additives to increase the productivity of the cement plants and the resistance of the cement, was created and continues to develop and expand its business with the technical assistance of the Swiss company Holcim Group. Similarly, Lecico for the ceramics industry was established, followed by Uniceramic in the same field. Mondi Packaging answered the needs of the cement industry and manufacturers of construction materials and others, by supplying paper bags for the packaging of their products.

Reducing pollution and preserving the environment through modern equipment, as well as training employees and workers, have been at the core of the Lebanese companies’ strategies in recent years. This goal is renewed annually through a major effort to achieve the best possible results according to the local and international standards, as Lebanon’s cement manufacturers contribute to building a sustainable environment.
