Egypt was one of the foremost countries to
establish a cement industry. It has kept on developing it according to the
latest scientific and technological methods, by using the most up-to-date
machinery and equipment. Its production of cement has acquired a distinguished
reputation and earned worldwide recognition.
The first Egyptian cement plant was constructed in Maassarah a suburb south of
Cairo, in the beginning of the 20th century.
This plant was later merged with Tourah Portland Cement Company. In 1911,
another small plant was built in Alexandria until it closed down in 1935. at
present, there are 13 companies in operation in Egypt.
In the beginning of Nineties, Egyptian government changed its policy towards
free economy applying a plan for economic reform, which included the
privatization of different sectors, one of which was the cement industry.
Following the implementation of privatization programs, multinationals became
present in Egypt as strategic partners: they are Lafarge, Titan, Ciment
Française, Cemex, Cimpor, Holcim, Aalborg (Cementir) and Vicat.
In 2005, total nominal capacities of cement in Egypt reached 36Mt of grey cement
and 700,000t of white cement. Actual production registered 33.565Mt and
consumption 28.256Mt, at a growth rate of 20 percent; 5Mt of cement were
exported.
